Rugby's Berlin Wall by Graham Williams, Peter Lush and David Hinchliffe.
1995 was a tumultuous year for both codes of rugby. In rugby league, there was upheaval in the professional game with the announcement of the formation of Super League, and the move to a summer season from 1996. In rugby union, almost 100 years to the day after 22 clubs had left the Rugby Football Union in 1895 to form the Northern Union, the sport announced that it was to become an open game, and accept professionalism for the first time.
This fascinating book examines the relationship between the two codes in England between 1895 and 1995. It then looks at what has happened to league and union, and the relationship between them over the last 10 years, when both codes have been fully professional at the top level. It also considers what has happened below the elite level, and
developments on the international scene.
